The range is a voltage range. It's -1.0 to +1.0 where 0.0 is
effectively -Inf dB, -1.0 is 0dB at negative voltage and +1.0 is 0dB at
positive voltage.

"Digital silence" is all zeroes, not all -1.0s. Though inputs coming
from hardware will be low level noise rather than absolute silence.
