Ok, I have some better information now...

aplay works fine - no glitches
jack with the same parameters - testing with jack_metro to get my stuff
out of the loop, glitches.

This is on a ALC888 - which has surround support with 8 output channels
(which I don't actually need).

The glitches only happen when there is a signal - and sounds to me like
something is being set to 0 at the beginning/end of the buffer (the
frequency changes if I change the buffer size).
