It means to do something outrageous to attract attention
when that is wearing out, and with the only result that
whatever remained of your credibility is lost.
So indeed, 'den H�hepunkt �berschreiten'.

The origin is in the TV series 'Happy days'. When the
audience started to decline the story editors made the
Fonz jump over a shark.
