Hi, Matthew:
Try running this command at the prompt (console or xterm) :
dmesg | grep Clock
On my system it returns this message:
Real Time Clock Driver v1.10d
Check in /lib/modules/your-kernel-version/char to see if rtc.o is
present as a module. If so, you can simply do (as root) 'insmod rtc.o'
and that should install the clock driver. However, you may also need to
create a device file for it too. Here's what the kernel configuration
help says about it:
If you say Y here and create a character special file /dev/rtc with
major number 10 and minor number 135 using mknod ("man mknod"), you
will get access to the real time clock (or hardware clock) built
into your computer.
Every PC has such a clock built in. It can be used to generate
signals from as low as 1Hz up to 8192Hz, and can also be used
as a 24 hour alarm. It reports status information via the file
/proc/driver/rtc and its behaviour is set by various ioctls on
/dev/rtc.
Btw, here's what 'cat /proc/driver/rtc' yields on my system:
[dlphilp_AT_localhost dlphilp]$ cat /proc/driver/rtc
rtc_time : 09:37:00
rtc_date : 2001-09-13
rtc_epoch : 1900
alarm : 07:00:18
DST_enable : no
BCD : yes
24hr : yes
square_wave : no
alarm_IRQ : no
update_IRQ : no
periodic_IRQ : no
periodic_freq : 1024
batt_status : okay
I hope that helps.
Best regards,
