i'm going to put all my software in ram, as well as the /tmp directory,
and then mount all my data from a hard disk. editing with /tmp in ram
will speed things up. however, if you are doing extended or multi-channel
(say,8) harddisk recording, you can easily use gigabytes of space in one
session. also, if the computer happens to crash, freeze, or the power
fails, you will lose everything. therefore, if you're doing harddisk
recording, use a harddisk, not ram! ram isn't going to speed up your
recording, anyway (you just need a hard drive(s) that can handle it).
i've tested several kernels for latency, and determined that 2.4.12-ac3-pe
is the best (for me) if not doing harddisk recording, while 2.4.10-pe and
2.4.10-ll are best if doing harddisk recording (tested 2.4.8 to 2.4.12
with various patches). i'll post a link to my results.

fwiw,
dave
