they should, though i have no way to test this (unless someone tells me
how use to the spdif out on an awe64 with the kernel oss). if you ask on
alsa-dev (and probably alsa-user), you could probably get an answer to
this question. have you tested the spdif in with oss or under windows?
the problem could be somewhere else (either in the card, the wire, or the
minidisk player).

that's because they are input meters. likewise, the pcm out meters show
activity coming from the computer on those channels, and the main meter
shows the actual signal that's coming out of the soundcard (or into the
recording program).
