my .ecasoundrc file says:
default-samplerate = 44100
This is presumably the default for ecasound, since I haven't changed
anything.

It sounds "proper" when I play it. I don't know anything about lame,
because I've always let ecasound run it for me. I did try running it
directly, to use the "-m m" option to get a mono mp3, and that mp3
sounded like the Chipmunks.
