hmm. i recall you were using a fixed bitrate of 128 before. the -v
option without a numerical argument takes 128 as average bitrate in
most cases (when feeding it a 16bits_AT_44k1 file), and the sound
quality should at least be equal, if not a lot better. at least it
is for me.

sorry i don't use mpg123, so i can't help you with that.
