I think i mentioned development of this before in the list.

Now i'm proud to publicly announce RX/Saturno, a Yamaha DX7 emulator.
It works with alsa, and can be registered as a sequencer client.
This way it can be used with any common midi sequencing app.
This synth was extremely popular in the 80's and there are thousands
of patch banks for it aviable on the net.

Yamaha DX7 uses a technique for synthesis called FM (Frequency Modulation), which basically works by "stacking" up to 6 sinewave operators to create alternate waves.

for example.. if you want to create something like a saw wave, you stack them like this:

sin(x+sin(x))

for a square wave:

sin(x+sin(x*2))

and so on. There is a lot of info about this on the net, and if you dont care about the technical aspect and want to go straight for the sound, you can simply get patchfiles (there's some included in the tarball) loaded
and use your favorite sequencer app.

the url for it is:

regards!

Juan Linietsky

(tip: the synth works in 44khz by default, but i think you'll get more "realistic" sound -and less cpu use ;)- if you decrease it to 22khz or 11khz
