Kare et al have been very modest about this good work. In my humble opinion,
this is one of the the sharpest linux tools around.
By the way, despite the name, wavesurfer can read and write almost any audio
format you can think of (WAV, AU, AIFF, MP3, CSL, SD, Ogg/Vorbis, and
NIST/Sphere).
