Subject: [linux-audio-user] sound output for oss compatibility using alsa drivers

This is probably a real newbie question. I've been
using mostly native alsa apps for sound output, but the few that I've used
that require OSS (/dev/dsp) output, I've found that I must be root to get
to work. Would I be mistaken to assume that it's because my /dev/dsp is
simlinked to /dev/dsp0 which is:
crw------- 1 root root 14, 3 Mar 15 08:09 /dev/dsp0
Can I simply chmod 777 /dev/dsp0 without doing damage to anything? Will
that enable me to get sound through it when non-root?
Thanks,
Bill
