If you're into it, I've read about people ripping parts off of old
SB16s and upgrading them with custom pres, A/D converters, etc.
Aparantly, the card is mostly made of discrete electronics, which makes
hacking it really easy.

Garth Brooks' engineer (who has posted to slashdot about audio on
occassion) has talked about how he uses a hacked up SB16 like this.
While he did it up with a fancy external tube amp, I bet you could do it
for a few bucks in quality parts from an electronics place, if you have
the desire/patience/skill/masochistic streak ::-).
