Greetings:

  Many thanks to all who responded to my query ! The way it looks at
this moment I'm considering a Thinkpad 600E or higher. Refurbished
models are quite within my budget (leaving me some $$$ for an nVidia
GForce card for my desktop machine), but more importantly I've changed
my expectations. I'll be quite satisfied if I can play CDs, WAV and MP3
files, and get some some realtime output from Csound. Getting OpenGL
support seems out of my price range, as is true for higher-grade audio.
Given its limitations the machine is likely to be used for more text
processing than audio processing; still, I do want working audio, and
the reports on the TP series have been optimistic.

  Thanks again to everyone, and if anyone has more to say about the TPs
please shout it out... :)

Best regards,

== Dave Phillips
