mattt, not true:

on debian, there are two types of dependencies: "suggestions" and
"dependency". a suggestion is merely that: a suggestion. a dependency
means "can't exist without the other package".

esound is listed as a "suggestion" for all the gnome packages i can
think of.

this means, if you uninstall esound, apt-get should ask you if you
"really want to do this". however, removing esound will not uninstall
gnome.

if you don't believe me, give it a try:

  satan# apt-get --dry-run remove esound
  Reading Package Lists... Done
  Building Dependency Tree... Done
The following packages will be REMOVED:
    esound
0 packages upgraded, 0 newly installed, 1 to remove and 1 not upgraded.
  Remv esound (0.2.23-3 Debian:testing)

the --dry-run option is very similar to make's "-n" option. it tells
apt-get to not really do the operation for reals.

note, i don't think the rpm format has a concept of "suggestions" and
"dependencies" like debian does. the rpm format simply has
"dependencies". so if you attempt to uninstall esound on redhat,
mandrake or suse, rpm may simply refuse to do so without a --forcing the
issue.

between people saying that "redhat has more drivers than other distros"
and "the low-latency redhat patch" there's quite alot of FUD on
this list.
