Dear lau's,

Let me share with you my weekend (or significant part of it) on yet another
effort to breakthrough in getting my computer to do what I want it to do.
Provide me with a set of tools for recording, editing inventing and
ultimately dreaming in my small homeworkingspace that gets me that feeling
(might call it happiness...).
Friday I was telling a dear friend of mine, actually a musician
(www.neilleyton.com), and a guy that has been always suspicious of
computers, and still records in a studio in an analog environment, but
lately sucumbed to the pleasures of PROTOOLS (and its plugins), that I was
losing too much time with my linux obsession, that I was not getting
anywhere, and worst, was getting rather frustrated, although I admit I've
learned a lot the past months, and yes I like tweaking on computers (ever
since my ZXspectrum, a LONG time ago).
Anyway I told him that I had to record and these events were keeping me from
its purpose, music man!
And the plan was simply to (I dual boot) return to Windows for some time,
record and compose for a while, and then try again, maybe with a fresh start
and some new directions!!
Eventually I read that email about Planet CCRMA, and it immediately got my
attention. A complete set of packages ready for use with ALSA/Kernel
(patched) for RH7.3 (my current flavour!), my oh my this would be great!
So Saturday afternoon, here we go, no stress about it, I did a fresh install
of RH7.3 (trying to install the less packages I felt necessary, and adding
OpenOffice, just in case!) Ok, went to Planet CCRMA website and went through
their excellent explanation and instructions.
Every bit of it was a breeze, easy, understandable, and it actually worked!
I have the Kernel and ALSA and everything( I didn't push it very far) seems
to be working. Great! For people out there that have been experiencing
problems I really think it's great (and fast if you have a good connection)
And it's a good way to stay updated for all purposes (OS and music tools). I
thing some packages are missing (some tracker, Ardour is planned, Slab,
etc.) but it's already a great start.
I'm happy for now and can't wait to get home and get my hands dirty but this
time no ./configure/make/install , just let me pick my guitar and try out
those plugins and do IT!
It's not AGNULA yet, but let me tell you I haven't had a breakthrough like
this since I was told about Gnu/Linux.

cheers,

Carlos Miguel Figueiredo
