I tried full/half/quarter, not much difference, my problems seems to be
related to my room layout.

The intro to KLF's "Last Train to Trancentral" has couple of whomping
booms at the beginning - they sound like slapping a piece of wet cardboard
in the center of the room, and like thunder in the corner.
