Just to follow up what I said i'd do: I did reboot with acpi=on and the
cardreader was detected when plugged in and when unplugged.
Unfortunately, the Midisport 8x8 is still not recognized.

Just to let you know before you ask ;-) yes, the Midisport 8x8 _does_
work under Win2k.

So, at this point, wouldn't it be fair to say that the loading of the
firmware is not necessarily the problem.. but the recognition that the
8x8 was plugged in is the first issue? (couldn't Linux recognize that
the 8x8 was plugged in, just as an unrecognized device.)
