Hello Dave, all--

If you just want a screenshot with callouts (text with a pointer to a
particular object and which explains or annotates the object) to embed
in a PDF document or to use by itself, my approach in the past has
been--

* take the screenshot (using gimp or ksnapshot or whatever), and save it
as a PNG or TIFF image

* open a vector graphics program and import the screenshot into the
workspace of a new document.

* use the vector graphics program tools to create the rectangular or
elliptical text areas for the callouts, as well as the text itself and
the lines or arrows pointing to various areas of the screenshot.

I created an example this morning using inkscape (NEAT program!) which
can be seen here:
