One problem is that dmix doesn't cure all problems. It doesn't work with OSS
apps, or ALSA apps that try to use different buffer/hw settings etc.

Plus you still have to kill all dmix using programs if you want to do
'serious' audio stuff (for example recording)

Plus it is very inconvenient, especially for newbies or non-technical
users, that you have to configure all this stuff while it works out of
the box on windows and mac os...
