I've often found onboard mic preamps much better than those in what
people call `semi-decent mixing board'. I've used at home a very
unexpensive [1]ST Audio DSP2000 C-Port (sorry I don't know right now
if supported on Linux) and its preamps are a lot better than those
noisy crap in Behringer consoles.

Of course this is only a personal choice and there are as many
personal choices as people, indeed. :)
