Hey Phil,
I'd recommend the M-Audio Audio Buddy
(http://m-audio.com/products/en_us/AudioBuddy-main.html). It's a two
channel mic preamp with phantom power and balanced, 1/4" TRS outputs.
They're low-noise, transparent sounding, and inexpensive. I picked one
up new from Guitar Center for $50 (on sale). They're usually about
$80.
I've looked at 4+ channel mic preamps, and they seem to be either
really cheap (Nady, SM-Pro) or way too expensive. The other option,
as other have mentioned, is a compact mixer (Yamaha, Mackie,
Soundcraft, etc.). I would look at one with 8 mic inputs, each with
an Insert jack or direct out.
