On reading some older emails about this problem, I realized that
Karsten asked me earlier to post the output of lspci and lsusb,
and I don't think I ever did, so here they are:

srussell@email-addr-hidden:~$ lsusb
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 07a6:0986 ADMtek, Inc. AN986 Pegasus Ethernet
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 1604:8001 Tascam US-428 Audio/Midi Controller

srussell@email-addr-hidden:~$ lspci
0000:00:00.0 Host bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8363/8365 [KT133/KM133] (rev 80)

0000:00:0a.0 CardBus bridge: O2 Micro, Inc. OZ6912 Cardbus Controller
0000:00:11.0 ISA bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8231 [PCI-to-ISA Bridge] (rev 10)

0000:00:11.2 USB Controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82xxxxx UHCI USB 1.1 Controller (rev 1e)
0000:00:11.4 Bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8235 ACPI (rev 10)
0000:00:11.5 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C686 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 40)
0000:00:11.6 Communication controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. Intel 537 [AC97 Modem] (rev 20)
0000:01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: S3 Inc. VT8636A [ProSavage KN133] AGP4X VGA Controller (TwisterK) (rev 01)

I know I've heard pretty bad things about these VIA chipsets, especially for audio stuff, because they tend to hog the bus, but hopefully I can at least make this usable. Thanks,

-spencer
