On reading some older emails about this problem, I realized that
Karsten asked me earlier to post the output of lspci and lsusb,
and I don't think I ever did, so here they are:

I know I've heard pretty bad things about these VIA chipsets, especially for audio stuff, because they tend to hog the bus, but hopefully I can at least make this usable. Thanks,
