It's not the shielding which makes balanced connections so good. The
idea of the balanced connection is simple and brilliant. The signal is
fed through the cable both in correct phase and reversed phase.

The idea is that when receiving the signal, the reversed phase is
corrected, which then reverses the phase on any noise. When the signals
are combined, the noise in the two signals cancel themselves.

Simply put: balanced connections are a huge gift to us. Use them
anywhere you can.
