Have you checked the input volume with 'alsamixer'?

About Jack, I have a Zoom G2 guitar fx and for some reason I have to
plug it in after the boot to get it seen by alsa.

Anyway I thought the snd-usb-audio module worked with any 'native USB
compatible' card.
