A few things I might try if I were insistent enough:

1) Unload ALSA modules and load OSS drivers. strace again and see if
you get the same errors. If so, do the same number of writes complete
sucessfully?

2) I might try seating the card in a different slot or cleaning the PCI
fingers to ensure it's getting a good connection.

3) If you know that your box has weird APIC/ACPI issues, you might
want to try booting with acpi=off, noapic, and or pci=routeirq kernel
options.

But if you can find another for $10 on ebay, it's probably not worth
your time.
