Mackie VLZ are indeed very good for the money, but you cannot expect that
something with hundred times more components migh have same or even better
quality than separate preamp circuit in the same price range.

I have an 1402 VLZ and I'm using the preamps (directly via inserts)
occasinoally. There is only a simple metering and once you use inserts, you
have no metering at all. Also, the only thing you can set is the gain via
tiny knob. It'd also like to have more headroom, -10dB pad etc. etc..

The new Onyx line is probably better, but I would still prefer standalone
preamp as a DAW frontend, especially in this price range.
