Well, white noise does only mean that the signal power is equal at any
frequency and, yes, it sounds pretty similiar to the radio-in-between sound.
It's often used to measure the frequency behaviour of mic's for example.

Pink noise is another special noise.
Punk noise, too.

When the sound is similiar to the sound triggered by you touching the
unplugged
jack it is very possible that its a ground loop noise.
Do you use devices that are connected to different electric circuits but
the same
signalmixer?

Otherwise: Try to change the battery or the signal cable.
