You know, part of it depends on what you are doing. You might
think about all of them for different things. For example, I
need to keep track of a lot of fiddle tunes. I have tried lilypond
for that, but abc is good enough and much simpler. Your
file manager or make should know how to create a pdf from
whatever format you choose.

You could try Quanta for editing MusicXML. It's not a music
editor, but it's a generic XML editor, which seems more like
what you will want anyway.
