Actually, that looks more like what I'm (still) getting with my old
Layla20 on an ASUS Striker Extreme motherboard:
---------------------------------------------------------------
[15827.997832] Echoaudio Layla20 0000:02:06.0: PCI INT A ->
Link[APC1] -> GSI 16 (level, low) -> IRQ 16
[15827.997852] firmware: requesting ea/layla20_dsp.fw
[15828.006036] firmware: requesting ea/layla20_asic.fw
[15828.257804] wait_handshake(): Timeout waiting for DSP
[15828.279477] wait_handshake(): Timeout waiting for DSP
[15828.301118] wait_handshake(): Timeout waiting for DSP
[15828.301167] Echoaudio Layla20 0000:02:06.0: PCI INT A disabled
[15828.301205] Echoaudio Layla20: probe of 0000:02:06.0 failed with
error -5
---------------------------------------------------------------

If I remove the firmware, I get this instead:
---------------------------------------------------------------
[16058.211778] Echoaudio Layla20 0000:02:06.0: PCI INT A ->
Link[APC1] -> GSI 16 (level, low) -> IRQ 16
[16058.211801] firmware: requesting ea/layla20_dsp.fw
[16058.214823] get_firmware(): Firmware not available (-2)
[16058.215246] Echoaudio Layla20 0000:02:06.0: PCI INT A disabled
[16058.215271] Echoaudio Layla20: probe of 0000:02:06.0 failed with
error -2
---------------------------------------------------------------

So, I think we're looking at a different problem here. It seems like
the interrupts aren't going through for some reason. Why, and is
there anything one can do about it, short of trying a different
motherboard?

uname -a:
Linux localhost 2.6.27-gentoo #2 SMP PREEMPT Fri Oct 17 03:23:28 CEST
2008 x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz GenuineIntel
GNU/Linux

Using the ALSA drivers that come with the kernel. IRQ 16 is also used
by a Silicon Image SATA interface (sata_sil24), and two nVidia 8800GT
video cards, and there doesn't seem to be much I can do about that.

There are two PCI slots, but one is blocked by a video card cooler. I
could try removing the offending video card and see if the Layla DSP
card works in that PCI slot... Wouldn't really solve my problem
(there are two video cards for a reason :-), but it might be
interesting to see if it has any effect.
