That is NOT what phantom power is for. Usually, phantom should be
switched off on your dynamic mics (kick, snare, and toms) and on for
your condensers (overheads).

Worth a shot. The preamps on the Mackie probably aren't any worse
than the Nady. I still think something fishy is going on in your
setup.
