in a way, yes. a physical source, i.e. an actual speaker, will always be
in the correct place. hence the need for a center in cinema, so that
even the people in the cheap seats hear the dialog where the faces are
on the screen.
a phantom center source, created by sending the same signal to L/R, will
eventually collapse into the speaker nearest to you when you sit off-center.
as to 4ch surround, it doesn't work that well, as fernando explained.
the best proof for this is the total failure of all the 70s
quadraphonics standards...
what is your intention? from your initial post, it sounded like you want
to do away with the center, and do 5.1 playback over a square of
speakers? what kind of material do you want to listen to?
