ISTR that Brian Eno got his start in Roxy Music playing the mixing desk, processing the band's sound through a VCS3. IIRC his title was "sonic manipulation" or something similar.

Then he started doing it on stage instead ofrom FOH, and wearing feather boa's, eyeliner, and bangling jewelry, the rest, as they say, is history.
