Good examples.

The thing about the internal cards though is the card can be good but
the PC can be really, really bad and that effects what the internal
card can accomplish. The external unit, on the other hand, is likely
to work the same way day after day, year after year, no matter what PC
I use, no matter what distro I choose.

I've been very happy with my RME HDSP 9652 using an external word
clock generator to drive all my interfaces and external D/A and A/D to
get audio in and out. The more modern RME stuff is probably far better
than what I use. Again, it's mostly you get what you pay for, as long
as you're careful about what you pay for.
