I've used both M-audio and RME devices with ALSA + Jack and have never
used this setting. In fact, I was told once (on IRC or maybe on this
list) to not use it if I have hardware than can do zero-latency
monitoring.

Same here... don't see what it actually provides. hdspmixer (and
previously envy24control) is what I use for all of my monitoring
needs. :-)
