jkmeter displays the digital peak value as a number (in dBFS, I assume).
That one I used to check whether vlc's output exceeds the {-1...1} range.

One other thing that comes to mind: I used vlc's jack output.
Lacking hdspmixer, I can't see levels with Alsa.
