I've installed both Ubuntu Studio 13.04 and Xubuntu 12.10 recently
and both offered the option to 'autologin' during the installation,
so I guess it has been 'fixed' since 12.10.

It may be that even in 12.04 the configuration change could have
been accomplished by GUI. But then the person who helped you would
have had to describe a series of mouse clicks and menu choices which
may not have been as easy to follow. Or perhaps your assistant was
much more used to the orriginal way.
