Perhaps this is what I call transparency. If you use EQs correctly,
there is space between two instruments, even if it's a mono recording.
Some bad recordings, resp. copies with loss or when using lossy codecs,
are missing this space, such recordings do sound as if there's no space
between the instruments, but mud. Sure a compressor is helpful to
archive such a result too, but a compressor also can cause a muddy
sound.
