When Laurie Anderson said that on a radio special promoting Home Of The
Brave (I happen to have the vinyl) she attributed it to Steve Martin, which
(surprisingly) is wrong. Nobody knows who said it first, but variations on
it go back at least the turn of the LAST century.

That's why it has been attributed to everybody from Anderson to Zappa to
various journalists; it's more of an "old saying" than a contemporary quote.
