You can do non-GM MIDI with Rosegarden. I've used it a lot with Kontakt and
EWQL PLAY (hosted on an external machine). No GM required. You just need to
setup your MIDI devices under Studio->Manage MIDI devices (if you are using
an external app or device) and select the device under Track Parameters.
You can also use the built-in Synth Plugin device (and use DSSI).
My main issue with Rosegarden lately was the instability of the CC lanes...
they were clumsy to edit and the application would randonly crash when
editing nodes in the CC lanes. Maybe it's gotten better in the newer
versions.
