Thanks. I already had 'a2jmidid -e &' there, so should have known.

OT, but I need to vent about my Windows 7 experience. Enough was
enough for me years ago, but I have to use it for my racing game,
which is bad enough. I got nowhere with its USB MIDI system.

(Midi over Ethernet with NetJack2 worked well, and that's iRacing
which is a lot more than a game to many users, many of whom are
professional racing drivers. It works on Linux via Wine, which
is how I found it.)

Wasted hours trying everything I could find, but no play with
either of two devices which work well enough in Linux. Can't
even use an old RME 9652, because they don't do 64bit drivers.

One thing worked out much better though. I use the 'Onboard'
Virtual (typing) Keyboard a lot and the Windows offering always
steals the focus on opening, meaning I lose where I was. With
Windows in a Remmina window on Linux - clicking the taskbar for
Onboard doesn't affect the Windows caret(?) position.

Makes me wonder how much production and fun time is lost to that
kind of nonsense, world wide. It's badly broken in several places.
So grateful for Linux and its ongoing development. Thanks again.
