 Nicola,

 The "play" button is a preview. The actual mixdown is done with
 "File->Mix to Soundfile". We should add a mixdown button somewhere to
 make it more visible. Otherwise your suggested solution makes pretty
 much sense to me, we should do it as a first implementation.
