Just wanted to say that KWave and XWave can handle large files but
those programs might be otherwise limited. At least XWave cannot do
effects on very large files -- it applies effects only in memory.

KWave uses my mmapalloc()/mmapfree() routines the same way as malloc()
and free(). This means that audiofiles are copied to new files during
audiofile loading. All audio memory segments are kept in temporary files
by mmapalloc() routine. That was only a quick solution to the problem.
