Just jumping in from lurking...

I'm put in mind of a studio where I was trying to get my foot in the
door as an apprentice engineer a few years back-- they had just bought
the then-new Yamaha ProMix 01 (I think) which was a pretty impressive
board for the price. I thought it was great until I started trying to do
something I consider essential when mixing multi-miked sources like drum
kits -- trying lots of combinations of channel phase buttons (well,
polarity buttons, but for some reason we're stuck with calling it
"phase"). On an analog board you can just punch the snare bottom mic out
of phase, then back in, then out, then try the overheads out of phase,
then try it with a room mic, etc etc... everything's bleeding into
everything else so every combination of phase switches sounds a little
different...

this was sheer agony on the Pro Mix board. To hit one phase switch you
had to select the channel and then scroll through the list of parameters
for that channel until you found "phase". At the very least they should
have given the user a way to scroll through channels in a truly
independent two-dimensional way...
so going from [channel1][parameter8] to [channel2][parameter8] is a
single action...
