Be sure to check out the Nuendo interface for this. I imagine that
Steinberg has a .pdf file of the neundo brochure online. You can add
speakers at will, drag them around, then position the sound. It also
switches between an azimuth based view and a birds-eye view. Nuendo
makes a lot of claims about its ability to handle surround sound - it
would be worth finding out as much as possible about what they do.

Surround seems to have been a *hot* topic at AES this year. I take it
that you know about the various standards: 5.1, 7.1 etc ? I don't, but
I know they exist. Presumably there is some documentation on them
online somewhere. They cover surround sound with various specified
speaker configurations; 5.1 for example is 4 speakers plus a subwoofer.
Apparently, the home audio ("theater") industry sees a whole new way
to make money here, convincing us all that stereo is inadequate :(
