The only functionality that my idea of this API assumes, is the low level stuff,
like how buffers are passed to the process() function and that kind of things.
The initialization events only add functionality that makes it *easier* to fit
other kinds of plug-ins into the system. The "foreign plug-in interface layer"
gets a chance to express more in detail how it wants to interface with the
engine.
