Creamware went for a good solution I think, that is similar to your
(2). They effectively use a "tab notebook" (though it doesn't have
that appearance), and group things into:
2 sets of 8 channel strips
1 sets of 16 busses
2 sets of 8 "mixes" - don't know what these are
Then the aux send/returns and the master out controls are always
visible on the right hand side. For each combination, everything that
should be visible is always visible.
This is my plan too. I think its very simple to do this with
GTK. Right now, I have tabbed folders for Strips and Buses - I just
have to dynamically create new ones as the number of strips or busses
gets to large (and reset the labels to indicate the actual range).
