When I started work on ardour, it was conceived entirely as a
replacement for a tape recorder, not a DAW or soundfile editor.

That functionality (24 track 32 bit recording to multiple mono 32 bit
WAV files residing on a regular ext2 file system) is more or less
completely in place - I am just waiting for the kernel guys to fix the
disk I/O and VM problems before confirming that version 0.99 is ready
to go (bar a few minor GUI issues).

However, it became very clear that once the stuff has been recorded,
it would be good to be able to edit it. snd is the best editor we have
so far, and although internally it can handle multitrack work, its GUI
is not really designed for such things. As a result, I started
hatching my plan to redesign the GUI for snd-as-widget, and
incorporate it into ardour.

When you come at it from this angle, the idea of "importing" other
files is crazy: its an editor for whatever is on the "tape". However,
I recognize the utility of bringing in new material, and since snd can
support this, I'm sure it will be exposed as a feature at some point.
