You move the mouse toward the other edge. The important unit is
absolute distance from the center of the control element, not the
direction left or right.

sure, but the knob will keep working, and you can move back if need
be. this is a perennial hazard with virtual screens, and applies to an
GUI element that responds to mouse motion.
