This may beg the question, but IBM laptops, and probably others, can be
mounted on docking ports that then let you use the soundcard of your
choice, add extra high-speed hard drives, etc. I say 'begs the question'
because much of your recording functionality will only be as portable as
your dock is. I presently use an IBM 765L P166 and an IBM SelectaDock II
in this way. Things I can do away from the dock are edit midi and audio
files, and listen to product at low fidelity using the laptop's crappy sound.
