you missed a key point. this is for *real-time* audio recording. the
speed of the drive is completely irrelevant - its aimed at making
red book (16 bit, 44.1kHz, stereo) CD "masters".
i don't know of any technology for linux (or cd-r/cd-rw for that
matter) that would be suitable for what i think you're imagining.
the new alesis "24bit/multichannel cd" format is just an iso9660 filesystem
with mono AIFF or WAV files on it, 1 per channel. i don't think this
can be written in real-time - you have to do what the masterlink does,
and store it all on disk first, then write the iso9660 image based on
that.
